Peterson Cos. wins approval for huge data center campus in Stafford County

WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL – The Peterson Cos. has won approval for a massive data center campus in Stafford County, Virginia — another example of how the lucrative data center industry is seizing on opportunities beyond its most well-known stomping grounds in Northern Virginia.

Local lawmakers in Stafford on Tuesday approved a comprehensive plan amendment and rezoning for Peterson’s Stafford Technology Campus. It’s a 504-acre project on undeveloped, wooded land just off Interstate 95, opposite the Stafford Regional Airport, which at buildout would yield some 5.8 million square feet of new data centers.

Planned for 23 buildings and six substations, it’s the largest data center project Fairfax-based Peterson has undertaken and one of the largest in the larger Northern Virginia region, Taylor Chess, Peterson’s senior manager director of development, told me in an interview.
