Peterson Family Foundation has Committed $5M to National Cathedral Restoration, One of the top 5 largest gifts to “Cathedral for the Future” Campaign

FAIRFAX, Va., Nov. 29, 2022—The Peterson Family Foundation recently committed $5M to the restoration of the National Cathedral. Four million dollars of the gift will be used for earthquake repairs and $1M will go towards the restoration of the cathedral’s organ. The commitment is part of the Cathedral for the Future campaign.

In 2011, a rare 5.8-magnitude earthquake impacted the Washington, D.C. region, and caused more than $40 million in damage to the National Cathedral. Since the earthquake, the cathedral has been raising money and working to complete the much-needed repairs.

“As a longtime, Washington, D.C. family foundation, we wanted to help preserve this great landmark for all to enjoy,” said Jon Peterson, vice president of the Peterson Family Foundation and CEO of Peterson Companies. “Giving back to the community has been part of our family’s DNA and we’re extremely proud to support so many worthwhile organizations and causes.”

To date, the Peterson Family Foundation has also given millions to area charities including a recent $200,000 commitment this holiday season to organizations in the region helping to fight food insecurity including Manna Food Center, Women Giving Back, Food for Others, Northern Virginia Family Service, Loudoun Hunger Relief, Greater Washington Community Foundation and Stafford Food Security.

In addition to organizations listed above, current and past affiliations in the D.C. region include George Mason University, INOVA Health System, Gleaning for the World, Northern Virginia Family Service, Teach for America, Venture Philanthropy Partners and Youth for Tomorrow. The Peterson Family Foundation also gave more than $500,000 in 2020 and 2021 to area organizations working to end food insecurity and homelessness through a COVID Relief Fund.

For the Peterson family, philanthropy is more than financial support. Family members are actively involved with the family foundation and are engaged with non-profits in the D.C. region as well as nationally and internationally Each family member sits on multiple non-profit boards and all the organizations they support share the family’s core values for helping others.
