Margaritas and horse racing: Fairfax Corner hosts Cinco de Derby event

by Amy Aubert/ABC7
On Saturday afternoon, crews worked to set up a Cinco de Derby event at Fairfax Corner.

“We’ll have margaritas and blackberry mint juleps. We’ve got a live DJ that will be here and, of course, we are streaming the Kentucky Derby live on our big jumbo screen. We’ll have giveaways and games,” said Joanna Rothermel, with Property Marketing.

It’s an effort to get people out and about.

Crews are busy gearing up for their Cinco de Derby event at Fairfax Corner today!

“This is something you can’t get when you’re sitting on your couch shopping online,” Rothermel said.

“It will definitely bring me out,” Fairfax resident Isnar Guerrero said. “I will be out, you know, if they make more events like this.”

Check out this jumbo screen! They'll be streaming the #KentuckyDerby live right here... Then afterard they're turning to the #Caps game!! #CincoDeDerby

Proceeds from the raffles are going toward Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center.

“They do so much work with disabled children, with veterans, really such a phenomenal organization locally here in our community,” Rothermel said.

The community is coming together to support businesses and have a little fun.

“It’s about that experience,” Rothermel said. “It’s making memories and really enjoying these festivities.”
