Old Town import Hen Quarter arrives in downtown Silver Spring on Monday, serving up comfort food amid a rustic farmhouse feel. Southern-style recipes and chicken rule the roster of menu items, with starters like deviled hen eggs and fried green tomatoes and mains ranging from chicken and waffles to shrimp and grits.

The new concept from Pheast Food Group is opening its second Washington, D.C., area location in downtown Silver Spring on Monday in the former Silver Plaza home of Austin Grill on Ellsworth Drive. All eyes were on National Harbor last night as the new, $1.4B MGM resort and casino opened to the public. Fifty minutes after it opened, the massive casino was filled to capacity, and the resort closed its entrances.

A 15,000-square-foot conservatory at MGM National Harbor will feature a seasonal garden with decorations to match. As MGM opens a new resort this week it will deliver a victory in a long effort to develop a shoreline carved from a sand and gravel pit. The $1.4 billion resort at National Harbor puts casino gambling just seven miles from the nation’s capital.

Officials gathered Thursday morning to mark the festivities with an opening day press conference and they did it in style. In addition to a performance violinist Ken Ford, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker III spoke at the opening ceremony. "Our administration has been proud to fully support this important project," Hogan said.
